Music Page Progress

Today, i planned and designed the layout for my music page on the TRILL website. In the box at the bottom there will be a gallery where users can flick through pictures of an event i am yet to decide on. On the right i want to include some videos of up and coming artists doing covers of their selected songs (this is where i wish to include the concept i came up with "TRILL BUSY IN THE BOOTH". In the middle will be shortened articles with links to other pages to view the whole article and then on the left will be a live twitter feed. Tomorrow i will begin to add the content i need. like the images, and maybe a few of the videos. So far, the only problem i have encountered is getting familiar with the settings and hundreds of different options available on wix. I had to start over twice after noticing the links to other pages kept getting muddled up. But now i am confident with the template i have created and i am ready to start giving the website some body!!!

Designing

After seeing Babz' sketch of the Trill logo with a twist for the music section for our wix website, our whole group has decided to do a different logo for each separate section to the website, e.g fashion, sport and art. We will be drawing all our sketches up soon and uploading them, so look out!

"Trill Busy In The Booth"

Today i came up with the concept and designed a logo for "Busy In The Booth". this will be the main focus topic for the music page on Trill's website. It is basically an opportunity to hear exclusive interviews and live covers from up and coming artists. On the MTV website, they have music videos and so to give us some orignality we are using our own videos of artists. I aim to get at least 10 videos. I'm also planning to take pictures of the people i am using as musicians. This will be done on

Style of News Package

This lesson I have spent some time looking at various adverts and other news reports trying to raise awareness for skin cancer, mainly focusing on sunbeds. I've selected two videos which I think are the most effective, not only in getting the message across but also about raising awareness to the cause that many young people are now finding and interest in.

VIDEO 1

The video above is a real life story of this girl that was increasingly using sunbeds. The video was released by cancer research to raise awareness. Throughout the video it is constantly zooming in and out of her face, close up shots of her mouth and other areas.

VIDEO 2

This video is from the BBC and it highlights all the dangerous factors of sunbeds that we might not physically see on a day to day basis but are still harming us very much. Nicola Roberts, member of the girl band 'Girls Aloud', has taken the roll to open this girls eyes to the harm she is doing to her body at a young age.

BBC: Media blamed for 'sexualisation' of young girls

In todays lesson, i am making a start on the reporters script. I have been looking into reports on tanning. I am doing this so i can understand how this topic is approached but also so i can get ideas on what important facts need to be included in the dialouge.

Music Page For The Website

I have been looking at how MTV has laid out their music page on their website because I think it works really well and has such a large fan base. The first thing I noticed was the content. They have filled the page with the current music which interests their target audience and have made sure there is enough on the page to keep the viewer entertained. There are videos, links and picture and the page seems very animate. At the bottom, there seems to be a live twitter feed which allows the users to comment on the go and keeps the website up to date with all the latest comments. There is also a button underneath which allows you to follow MTV. These are all things I would like to incorporate into TRILLS music page. I think I will use this a template whilst creating mine.

Production Roles

In this lesson we've assigned everyone in group certain roles in the production of the news package ensuring that the whole process runs smoothly. So, for example, someone will be designated to the role of the camera, who will be in charge of the shooting and the variety of shots that will be used during the news package.

Babz
Has been assigned the role of 'camera man' who will be filming the whole of the news package ensuring a number of a range of shots will be used and make the news package as interesting as possible using transitions and angles.

Fabio
Fabio will be in charge of all the props we will be using. This includes writing up a prop list that is appropriate for our news package, getting and bring them to the set and actually setting them up ensuring they look as professional as possible.

Chandni
Has agreed to present and have the main role of the news reporter. A script will be written up by everyone in the group and in which she will read from but not directly.

News Report subtitle

During the lesson I made the subtitle for our news report, this is what will appear at the bottom of the screen telling the viewer the name of the person who is being interviewed and what their obligation is. The colours that have been chosen for this are the same colours as our logo and therefore related with our News Corporation.

Tanning Salon 2

Our second location we are considering to film our news package at is a tanning salon in north finchely named 'Fake It'. It's located on a main high street amongst other restaurants and shops. Its a fairly big tanning salons with 2 stand up sun beds, 2 lie down sunbeams and even spray tanning. With permission to film in their shop and the people in it we will begin to film next week.

Nass

Tanning Salon

For our news report, we plan too go to 'Absolutely Fabulous Tanning' in Edgware to interview a beautician. We will ask about the rules in their shop, what they tell customers before they go into the sunbed and their personal views on tanning. We will also film our vox pops on the high street where the tanning shop is located.

Storyborad for news package.

For this lesson, i began to draw out the storyboard so while we are filming we can have a visual aid in helping us decide the order of what we need to film. I'm finding it challenging because i cant draw very well so im having to do my best and hopefully it wont look too bad.

Babz

Sunbed Salons

Over the weekend I visited a few different sunbed salons and asked them all to see a copy of the "risks" posters they have stuck in the changing rooms of the sunbed visible to all the users before they tan. I photocopied all of these and assessed all of them together and found that all the risks they had named were all practically the same...But what makes people carry on using sunbeds when they are aware of these risks? During filming we will be putting number of questions which could potentially answer some of our questions. We will hopefully be interviewing the owners of these salons and some users that we come across on the day so we can get an honest opinion/answer to the questions we will be asking.

Facts That We Can Use

Here are a few facts that i found on the nhs website that we can use in the reporters dialouge or as part of the voice over. They highlight the risk of using sunbeds and briefly mention our target audience which is especially helpful to us because it makes our research relevant to our audience.

Website- what to include

I have looked at the itv news website, the sky news website and the BBC news website, I've found some common features that are found in both news websites.

For example, all include the logo in the top left corner of the page, except for the sky news website in which the logo is at the top of the page in the centre.

The BBC news website and the sky news website both include a 'Services' section at the bottom of the home page. This section includes different methods of using the news websites, for example mobile and RSS.

All three websites also have a 'Top stories' section which we will include in the home page of our trill website.

extra recording

Our group has realised that in order to complete our title sequence to the  maximum potential we have all agreed that there must be more recording involved and so therefore must do extra bits of recording. The task that we have set ourselves is to record shots of high streets such as people walking and jumping on and off buses, this will give us the inside view of what the typical London high street looks like. Some may see this as a set back but we see this will help us have as many shots as possible and make our title sequance as good as possible.

Research on sunbeds

-They give out harmful UV rays which damage the DNA in our skin cells, which can cause cancer.
-Estimated to cause around 100 deaths a year in the UK from melanoma.
-Causes premature skin ageing, making the skin leathery, coarse and wrinkled.
-The UV rays can damage your eyes, causing irritation, conjunctivitis or cataracts.
-The NHS recommend that people don't use sundbeds if;

  • They are under 16
  • They have fair skin
  • They have sensitive skin
  • They have a history of sunburn
  • They have freckles
  • They have moles
  • They have skin cancer or someone in their family has skin cancer
Alternatives to sunbeds:
  • Airbrush tans
  • Tan in a bottle
  • Tanning pills
  • Bronzers

Questions

In todays lesson i came up with all the questions we'd need answered for the news package.

Questions for interview with someone in the field.

What are your views on tanning?

Do you and your colleagues inform the teenagers of the dangers of tanning before they use the sunbeds?

How do you think that celebrity culture has had an impact on the increase in sunbed usage?

What is the average time someone uses a sunbed for and how do you think this affects their health?

Do you find tanning is increasingly more common in males as well and what do you think this is a result of?

Do you find excessive tanning more common amongst older or younger people?

How often do people use sunbeds and whats the recommended usage?

What regulations are in place which mean young people under the age of 18 are protected from the risks of sunbeds?

What are the health risks associated with tanning?
Questions for voxpops.

As a teenager, do you feel like you have been made aware of the health risks involved with tanning using sunbeds?

As a part of an ethnic minority, do you feel the issue of excessive tanning doesn't affect you.

Why do you think people prefer to use sunbeds knowing there are health risks involved instead of fake tan, a more safer option.

Have you ever used a sunbed?
If YES...
Has celebrity culture affected your decision to do so?
If NO...
Why did you choose to do so?
Do you think the media needs to do more to make younger people aware of the risk involved with using sunbeds?
If YES why?
If NO why?

Do you feel that you are informed of the effects of sunbeds, by the tanning salon?

Questions for Health proffesional

Do you think the issues associated with excessive sunbed usage are spoken about as much as they should be?

Would it be sensible to make the legal age of sunbed usage 21. What would be the positive and negatives of doing so?

Statistics

My task today was to find statistics and facts online for sun tanning and its dangers as that is what our news report and news package will be based around. the main objective was looking for these statistics and finding reliable sources such as the World Health Organisation and the National Health Service. I found the sufficient and reliable statistics on the websites for the news package including the amount of recognized sun tanning salons.

Fabio

Strength and Weaknesses.

If we looked at our idea in more detail, we can see that it is a news worthy topic but at the same time might not interest everyone. If we sum up the strengths and weaknesses, we can decide on whether or not our idea is strong enough to be reported on.

STRENGTHS
* The topic has a serious element to it and can help raise awareness of a situation many pay little attention to. The health risks are rarely touched upon even though there is an underlying worry.

*It does relate to our target audience age group and even above. Tanning has recently become a big thing  amongst teenagers who might not be aware of the risks.

*There aren't regular reports about tanning so we we are re-enforcing concerns.

*Because of the health side to our tanning argument, we can use a health official to back up what we say. This gives our argument some reliability and will give our package more body.

*Our idea is open to public sprutiny. Which means we will also get the public's input.

WEAKNESSES
* The idea of tanning instantly discludes a fraction of our target market. People of colour might not be interested or relate to the topic which means we wont be interesting as many people as we initially predicted. Boys also might not take as much interest as girls.

*As we arent really sunbed users ourselves, we know little about the topic therefore all our knowledge will come from research rather than our own knowledge gained from being pasionate about the issue.

REASONS FOR FINAL CHOICE

We have decided that reporting on the increase of sunded usage would be a good option. Although we did briefly look at he sexualisation of children, we felt that our target audience would find tanning more interesting. Doing the tanning issue means that we can briefly go into the celebrity culture that has meant we are easily influenced into doing what our idols do regardless of its consequences. We can also get a health care official to back up our story with medical facts and statistics which will add to the reliability of our story. We've also decided that to give our report some body and structure, we are following a single person's story where they will talk about their life experience in relation to our idea.

Babz

New direction for our news report

Today I have researched tanning news reports that have already been done and found a BBC report for skin cancer and tanning.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRNgwd0GYTU&safe=active

We have now decvided to base our report on one persons story of the effects of tanning for that person, for example if the person got skin cancer or a cancer scare. This gives the report a more clear direction and therefore we can also use interviews with this person, as well as vox pops, a proffesional interview and statistics.

Title sequence

For the past few days we have been working on editing the title sequence . Realising that we had too many zooms, which could look amateur, we cut out most of these. We have also decided not to use the footage of the shop windows as they are shaky, but to use a still image from it. The shot of Wembley Stadium didn't fit in with the rest of our footage so we have decided to replace this with shots of traffic and busy streets. We are making progress with the editing as we have added the music and the logo and finished 20 seconds of the title sequence, therefore we have just 10 seconds more to finish. We wil continue working on this for the next couple of day before moving onto the rest of the news package.

Research

In today's lesson i have been spending my time researching different areas of London that would be suitable for us to film in. I used youtube, google maps and my own knowledge to help me decide.

Options:

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDXx11YD55M&safe=active - Although this footage is very shaky, you can still get a good idea of the area. This short clip of Sloane Street in London shows all the aspects of the middle class. There are many shots of all the expensive cars that pass up and down the street and also all the high end designer shops. This is perfect to show off London as a town however on the other hand, for out target audience it might be a bit far fetched. Most teenagers of todays post modern society dont have all the luxuries that are shown.

2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZE83XOHtJY&safe=active - This link is a short film of a bus ride down Oxford Street. I reckon this is a more suitable area to shoot at. Not only are the youth of today more familiar with it, it is also a very interesting with a lot to offer. The high street is always well maintained and pretty with the many different shop decorations and street decorations, especially approaching christmas.

These options will be discussed with all the group and the decision will be made on agreement!

Nass

Title Sequence

Today Chandni and Fabio are continuing to edit the final copy of our title sequence to perfect it as much as possible. Taking away all the shaky shots and selecting a variety of shots to make it look as exciting & interesting we can. However whilst we were filming we were zooming into shots quite a bit and when it came to editing the footage we realised we wernt allowed to use many zoom shots because it looks very amateur and also the fact that simply there were just too many of the same camera movement. Therefore we've taken the opportunity to improvise and mix it up a bit by creating some still montages of the shots we film within the title sequence and some will be actual footage. This gives it somewhat an 'urban street' edge which is perfect for our theme.

Who? What? Where? When?

Today our group will be putting together a detailed plan for the filming of our footage. We have to start by figuring out exactly what we want to include, what shots we need, where we'll film, who'll be presenting, what day, what time of day, etc. Also we need to put a props list together, for example, costumes, microphone(if we use one) etc.

Reporters Presence

This lesson I've been looking at different news reports on a variety of subjects, mainly from Newsround, to get a rough idea of the package as a whole, for example, what they wear, where they stand in accordance to the camera, how they speak (informal, formal), if they use a microphone or not etc. The reason i looked in detail to this news channel is because it is very closely matched to the 'feel' of our news channel purely because it is more suited for the younger generation, i.e teenagers.

ITEM 1: http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/13877119
ITEM 2:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00vhl5j

Reffering to item 1 you can see that the reporter is wearing fairly informal clothes (a plain t-shirt, fashionable jacket and jeans) whereas in item 2 the reporter is dressed somewhat the opposite, wearing a shirt, smark trousers and shoes and a blazer. Also notice that in item 1 even his guest speaker is dressed informally wearing just a hoodie however in item 2, again, there is a distinct difference and his guest speaker is also wear smart attire. Another aspect I picked up on was the non diegetic sounds in both clips. Item 1's non diegetic sound is a well know pop song which all the current generation i'm sure are aware of. They lyrics of the song are clear enough and they also match to the subject they are talking about. On the other hand item 2's non diegetic sounds are not as familiar. The music played is just an upbeat rhythm with no lyrics heard.
All these aspects contribute to the target audience in my opinion and taking influence to the news channel that is most similar to ours our group will hopefully take these aspects on board to make our news package as suitable and as enjoyable for them as possible!

Reporters Script.
The growing obsession with getting 'Golden and glowing skin' inspired by celebrity culture has meant that skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the uk. The use of sunbeds amongst young people is increasing at an alarming rate which has led to serious concern from health professionals.

Today i started the script for the reporters direct to camera dialogue and will make a start on the the facts and stats.

Title sequence music

Today we completed the music for our title sequence, we completed it by using garage band. Everyone agrees that it fits in perfectly with our title sequence, the title sequence music is 30 seconds long which means we will have to edit our title sequence to match the video, we are clearly progressing through this course work marching through it bringing out our best media and music skills.

Filming The Music Elements.

Today i filmed all the music aspects of of opening title sequence in camden. I managed to find a few things which related to music which  were the sound activated t-shirts, a rack of head phones and a wall of old record disks. I intially didnt think filming would be as hard as it was. I found that it was far too busy for me too keep a steady hand (because i used my own camera, i didnt have a tripod). Because of the masses of people in camden, i found that it was hard to get a good shot first time which meant i had to film the same thing several times and at the end review which shots were good enough to use. as well as this, things i had expected to find in camden that i thought would work well in the opening sequence, i didnt find like the music shop or the buskers which i usually see when i go.

Articles for the website

Today I started thinking about all the different articles we could feature on the website. I came to the conclusion that all the articles that will be written have to suit our target audience therefor subjects such as fashion, sport and things to do with our youth group will have to be presented on the website.
I reckon having different pages for each of these matters will be more informative for the viewers of the website and will also produce a more of an in depth insight to that specific issue for those who are more interested in it, making our new site suitable for everyone, having matters that everyone is interested in.

Analysis of News Packages

In today's lesson, i started analysing a news package so we could begin to understand how they are structured and how its content is organised to keep the audience interested. I looked at a BBC news report and 'Global Youth Unemployment' that i found on youtube.

The clip starts with a midshot of the presenter looking directly into the camera and introducing the topic. this allows us to briefly familiarise ourselves with the presenter but also introduces the subject of discussion. He doesn't talk about the topic in too much detail with the kowledge that the news report will do so.

The next thing shown to us is a panning camera movement which sets the scene for the report, a factory. The  'BBC WORLDNEWS' logo still remains at the bottom right of the scream.

A few filler shots that add body to the report are then used while the voice  over plays.

The news reported is then shown walking towards the camera whilst speaking. He begins to go into  more detail about the topic which in this case is youth unemployment. His body language is formal at the same time as welcoming in a way. His hand gestures are a from of communication with the audience and he seems to be looking directly into the camera and building a relationship with his audience through the way he communicates even if it is only for 5 minutes. His attire is formal and smart in order to communicate proffesionalism.

He then introduces the subjects as people experiencing the topic of discussion. they dont talk but the are still given camera time.

The presenter the inroduces a Head Teacher. This choice or interviewee possibly comes about people as a head teacher, youth unemployment would be an important topic. His status gives the piece some reliability.

Analysis of BBC News Report

After the news title sequence the news reader introduced the report in a close up shot.

The news reporter then began talking about the subject the report was about in a different location that is relevant to the story, in a mid shot.

A scenario was then shown in an establishing shot.

A vox pop was then shown where the news reporter asked someone related to the report about what he thought. This is usually done in a short reverse shot, but here is done in a two shot

Then went back to the news reporter in a mid shot, where he finished the report and summed it up

Back to the news reader in a close up who moves on to the next story.

Fashion Aspect

For a part of our news channel we have a fashion page. For this
babz and i have taken pictures of people from our age group who have an interest in fashion and asked them who inspired their 'look.'
Mostly it was the medias most common celebrities, mainly in the music industry, that have inspired their dress sense. When we official post all the pictures on our TRILL website, we will have a top 10 of the looks and then compare to the celebrities they were looking up too. We've not only look at the outfits they wore as a whole, but also the small details, such as the chain on top of the done up collar, etc.

NEW UP AND COMING ARTIST NATALIE GOOD RELEASES HER FIRST SINGLE.
Natalie good, one of London’s emerging vocalists has released her first single after being signed to record label BigBeats. After working on her music career individually for more than 4 years, she was spotted by the BigBeats Director Anthony Michael who stumbled across her during a performance she did at a London club. He then contacted her through her agent and they both decided that joining BigBeats would benefit Natalie’s music career the most. Her new track entitled “Swaying” features another emerging artist Chillah. Although they have yet to film a music video for their track, an audio is available on Youtube and can also be downloaded on itunes. Natalie’s biggest fan, her mum, is said to be “over the moon” about the signing and although she no longer manages her daughter, believes strongly in the BigBeats management team.
